Our Health Policy
The health and safety of our students and staff remain our highest priority. With this in mind OBAP adheres to the guidelines outlined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
We ask that you help us protect the health of students this summer.
If you have a specific question and for more information regarding this Respiratory Policy, please contact Antonio Thomas at antonio.thomas@obap.org.

OBAP’s Respiratory Policy
At OBAP we will encourage and follow strict hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene practices in an effort to prevent the spread of viral infections. We will maintain a safe environment with detailed attention to routine cleaning while focusing on the disinfection of high risk areas listed below which may be potentially contaminated.
Below, you will find a summary of actions we are taking to help ensure that we are preventing the transmission of respiratory viruses amongst our students, staff and guests:
- Adhering to routine daily cleaning and disinfection practices within our ACE Academy classrooms, facilities, and premises with special attention to frequently touched/used surfaces.
- Frequently touched areas will include but are not limited to: bathrooms, drinking fountains, door handles, light switches, desks, shared electronic devices, handrails, and transport vehicles (e.g. buses or vans
- ACE Academy staff will ensure the safe and correct use and storage of disinfectants. At no time will a student handle cleaning or disinfecting products.
- Students will have their own individually labeled containers and cubbies so their belongings are separated from others.
- Providing disposable utensils and dishes along with pre-packaged boxes or bags when food and drinks are provided.
- Promoting healthy hygiene practices. All ACE locations will have hand sanitizers and hand soap available and accessible to students, volunteers, staff, and guest speakers. Academy staff will place an emphasis on the importance of washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizers have an alcohol concentration of at least 60% alcohol. Everyone will be encouraged to cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or to use the inside of their elbow. Signs will be posted about these healthy habits around OBAP’s ACE Academies.
- Students and staff who are recovering from a respiratory illness must wear a mask for the next 5 days after being fever free and take additional precautions.
- If a child does get sick at an academy, we have identified an area where they can rest with supervision and safely isolate themselves from others. We will communicate with parents or caretakers directly and, if necessary, arrange for the child to be taken to a local healthcare facility for care.
- Parents/caretakers should monitor potential students for respiratory illness signs and symptoms PRIOR to attending camp. This includes but is not limited to: Fever (100.4), cough, sneezing, chills, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fatigue, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell and nausea/vomiting.
- Please contact your healthcare provider if you or your child is ill.
- Please note if your child is observed during the course of the day with respiratory virus signs and symptoms he/she will be provided with a face mask and parents will be notified.
Respiratory Virus Guidance Overview
Background: Respiratory viruses include but are not limited to Covid 19, Influenza, and RSV. These highly contagious viruses are responsible for millions of illnesses, thousands of hospitalizations and deaths each year.
Update: The Centers for Disease Control CDC is now issuing unified respiratory guidance rather than additional guidance for specific viruses. Covid 19 health impacts are now similar to other respiratory viruses like the flu.
Symptoms: Fever (100.4), cough, sneezing, chills, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fatigue, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell and nausea/vomiting to name a few.
Prevention: The CDC recommends the use of 5 Core Prevention Strategies to prevent the transmission of common respiratory illnesses such as Covid 19, Influenza and RSV. Within the OBAP organization, we promote and encourage the following Core strategies:
- Staying up to date with immunizations
- Good hygiene practices i.e. handwashing and cough etiquette
- Taking steps for cleaner air via opened windows to circulate fresh air, purifying indoor air as needed and promoting outdoor gatherings with weather permitting
- Preventing spread of the virus when ill
- Physical distancing- avoid being close to someone with respiratory virus symptoms. **There is no single number that defines a “safe “distance
Recommendations: Individuals who are symptomatic for a respiratory virus should:
- Stay away from others for 24 hours.
*The “Stay-at-home” period is based on symptoms not testing.
- May return to normal activities if after 24 hours symptoms are getting better, fever (100.4 or greater) is gone without the use of fever reducing medications
- Masks-Some people remain contagious beyond the “Stay-at-home “period. The use of well-fitting masks is strongly encouraged.
At home Covid 19 antigen tests are still available and may be ordered by calling 1-800-232-0233 or on the CDC website www.covidtests.gov (1 kit with 4 tests per household)
